In my opinion and the opinion of many legal experts, President Bush has broken the law. I am not opposed to the surveillance program, but am I am opposed to it when it is ignoring the checks and balances that were established to protect the American people and our constitutional rights.

President Bush’s argument defending the NSA program does not make sense! The program never limited their ability to watch and listen, it simply required that they follow the procedures in place that preserve checks and balances. Which begs the question: Why can they not do that? What is our government hiding that they cannot protect the country from a terrorist attack while also protecting our laws? Why did they never bring it up so we could find a legal way to remedy the laws? It is very disturbing to me. I find it extremely hypocritical that we are trying to “spread democracy” over there when we do not value its preservation here.

President Bush is not above the law, no person or president is. Senator Feingold should be applauded for standing up to this administration who have created a culture of intimidation and politically motivated personal attacks to distract discussions from the REAL problems. This is a crucial moment for Congress. They must hold the president accountable and preserve their role as a check on the power of the presidency.
